Action for Today!

1-Protect Our Democracy

There is only one Action for Today because the United States is in a situation that, to the knowledge of people at the Clearinghouse, has not happened before. Our friends at Indivisible have put together an email that includes resources and actions; find it below and please, TAKE ACTION!!!

Dear Indivisibles,

We don’t send a lot of mid-week emails like this, but we’re writing today because this isn’t a normal moment. Our democracy is under threat.

We are not being alarmist—the facts are just that serious. Yesterday, it was revealed that Donald Trump personally asked FBI Director James Comey to drop the investigation into ties between Michael Flynn and Russia. This is obstruction of justice, clear and simple. We have a system of government, with important checks and balances, that is designed to fend off tyranny and abuses of power. But this will only happen if Congress acts.

They’re not acting. And to be clear, neither party is doing what they should. Republicans in the House and Senate need to find some courage, and buck partisan politics in the interest of the country. Democratic Senators need to treat this like the urgent matter it is and use their power to withhold consent (see our explainer here http://tinyurl.com/n4uvt37), grinding Senate business to halt until Republicans come to their senses. It’s the only leverage Senate Democrats actually have.

So responsibility falls to us, constituents, to pressure our elected officials to act quickly in defense of our democracy. This email describes the asks you can make of your elected officials. For more information on the issue, see our resource page on Russia and Trump here. http://tinyurl.com/m9kppz8

How you can convince your Members of Congress (MoCs) to do the right thing

Your MoCs need to hear from you. http://tinyurl.com/lqabkv8 The single best thing you can do is show up in person with a group to their district offices. The next best thing is to call. But regardless of how you reach out, you should demand the following:

For Republicans House of Representatives:

As we’ve covered in the resource page on Russia and Trump http://tinyurl.com/lh893t8, House Republicans have repeatedly chosen to protect Donald Trump over our democracy. Republican leadership is refusing to even allow legislation establishing an independent investigation into Russian interference to come to a vote. The Swalwell-Cummings bill, called the Protecting our Democracy Act http://tinyurl.com/lrgfpcb, would establish an independent, 9/11-style commission to investigate Russian interference.

There is only one reason for the refusal to allow such legislation: the fear that a commission would reveal politically damaging information that would harm Trump and their party.

Earlier today, a bipartisan group of representatives filed a motion called a “discharge petition” that would force a vote on the Protecting our Democracy Act—but only if enough Representatives sign on in support. Every single House Democrat has already signed on, as well as two House Republicans. If you have a Republican House member, call TODAY and ask him/her to support the Swalwell-Cummings discharge petition.

For the Senate:

The country is facing a constitutional crisis, but business continues as usual in the Senate. Just today, the Senate began the process of confirming the third-highest ranking Department of Justice nominee—even though the Department of Justice is the very agency refusing to appoint a special prosecutor. This is unacceptable.

Congress should not be conducting business as usual when our democracy is under direct threat, especially not in the Senate where any individual Senator can slow and even shut down legislative business. That gives them a lot of power, and they should be using it.

If you have a Republican Senator, demand that they publicly support an independent investigation into Russian interference, and vote no on every Department of Justice nominee until the Department appoints a special prosecutor. This should not be a partisan issue—it is about the very future of our democracy. Let them know how important it is to you that we get to the truth, and that you expect them to protect our country. A number of Republicans in the House have come out in support of an independent investigation, so where are the Senate Republicans on this?

If you have a Democratic Senator, demand that they use every tool available to slow down legislative business unless and until the Department of Justice appoints a special prosecutor. Tell them to “withhold consent” by objecting to every motion offered in the Senate. This will effectively slow the Senate to a crawl, making it difficult to carry on business as usual. For a refresher on withholding consent and filibustering, see our explainer http://tinyurl.com/kkzgyqq.

Don’t forget, as a constituent your MoCs care what you think

You have power here. You can tell them that you will not accept any further delay in appointing a special prosecutor. They may not like it, but they will listen.

The time to take a stand is now. This isn’t about party or upcoming elections or anything other than the security of our country. As a constituent, your voice matters.

In solidarity,

The Indivisible Team

1-Protect US Public Lands

2-Trump-Russia Ties: Demand an Independent Special Counsel

  1. Protect US Public Lands: Many of our National Monuments–including Marine National Monuments–are being reviewed to determine whether extractive industries can mine/drill. 2-Demand an Independent Special Counsel

  1. Mama’s Bail Out Day (From My Civic Workout): SONG (Southerners on New Ground), the Movement for Black Lives, and other partner organizations have organized a special Mother’s Day initiative: posting bail for mothers nationwide who are being detained because they cannot afford the cash bond, and giving them the gift of being able to spend Mother’s Day with their families and communities. First, watch the Mama’s Bail Out Day video here. https://nomoremoneybail.org/ Next, though it isn’t common for us to ask you to give money as your workout, we encourage you to participate in Mama’s Bail Out Day by donating whatever you can to the Brooklyn Community Bail Fund, which is managing the donations for the initiative. https://brooklynbailfund.org/national-bail-out-day-donate
  2. Demand and Independent Special Counsel: Call your Congressional representatives and tell them to call on Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and demand an independent special counsel. Our script from yesterday (slightly modified):

“Hello. My name is _______________ and my address is ________________. I am a constituent of the Sen/Rep, and I’m asking you to demand an independent special counsel to investigate the links between the current Administration and Russia given yesterday’s firing of James Comey.

Actions for Today!

1-Hold Your Reps Accountable for Repeal of the ACA

2-Support Healthy Meals in Schools

You may notice that our title has changed. Going forward, we will be posting two Actions one time per day, and we hope you like the new format.

  1. Hold Reps Accountable for Repeal of the ACA: (From Indivisible) Last week, Republicans pushed their moral monstrosity of a TrumpCare bill through the House of Representatives. This week, they’ve gone back to their home districts all around the country—and it’s time for you to hold them accountable. Facebook Live on Payback Recess TONIGHT at 8:30 p.m. ET. We can answer your questions on TrumpCare and on how best to hold your Representative accountable this recess. We’ll be answering questions live, and you can also just tweet them at us ahead of time. Tune in to our Facebook page tonight at 8:30 p.m. ET to join us.
  2. Support healthy meals in schools: Write to Sec. Sonny Purdue 1400 Independence Ave. SW, Washington, DC 20250. Feel free to use this script: As a parent (or tax-paying community member), I oppose your plan to make school lunches less healthy. Your priority should be protecting the health of America’s youngest citizens, not the interests of corporate agriculture.

Action for Today! (1) Vote them OUT

Below is a multi-step action from My Civic Workout in response to yesterday’s vote on the Affordable Care Act.

1) 217 Republicans voted to strip protections from people with pre-existing conditions and remove Medicaid funding. In 2018, many of them will be up for election. If you are in a position to do so, donate to the challengers of those GOP reps. Act Blue makes it possible to split your donation evenly among their Democratic challengers. The higher an amount we get, the bigger a message we send: “Midterms are coming.”

2) Ready to blow off some steam? Check how your rep voted with the New York Times’ verified vote count. Then call your Congresscritter (they get lonely!) to let them know how you feel about their vote. Yes vote? Let them know that they have shamed the people who elected them. No vote? Thank them for standing up for the American people. Two easy ways to call: 5 calls will help you find your local representatives and help you with a script. Can’t get through to a human? Stance is an app that allows you to record a message and leave it on your rep’s voicemail. You can download it for iPhone or for Android.

3) 2018 midterm elections are coming up and this is our chance to take back the House from radicals who are willing to let sick people die so that the rich can get a tax cut. SwingLeft helps people to donate and volunteer in swing districts (districts that are controlled by Republicans but have voted Democrat in the past and can do so again) to help elect Democrats. Find your local swing district to get involved.

Action for Today! (2) Vote them OUT

Below is a repost of Flippable’s call to action:

to rebuild Congress, start in the states

Yesterday, Republicans in Congress voted to take healthcare away from millions of Americans, hastily passing a bill before understanding its impact.

But yesterday’s failing was about more than the GOP’s callous agenda. It was about a system that is fundamentally undemocratic. By drawing unfair Congressional districts that benefit Republicans, our GOP-dominated state governments sealed our fate long before the bill came to a vote.

With fair districts, Virginia alone could have provided the two votes we needed to stop repeal. Join the fight for a fair democracy by volunteering, donating, or spreading awareness about Virginia’s upcoming House of Delegates elections.

Action for Today! (1) Please pick up the phone and tell your Representative NOT to repeal the ACA

From Indivisible

Friends,

In a shocking move, Republican House leadership announced that they’ll be voting on TrumpCare today, in just a few hours. The TrumpCare bill eliminates protections for pre-existing conditions, defunds Planned Parenthood, and guts Medicaid. It is a horrifyingly bad bill—and it’s dangerously close to passing.

But here’s the thing: nobody knows how this vote will go. We say this as former congressional staffers emailing you from D.C.—they really don’t have the votes yet. There are still many undecided—or wavering—Representatives, and this gives you power.

There’s not much time left before the vote, so here are three ways to assert that constituent power:

  1. Show up, in person, at your Representative’s district office this morning. Bring friends. Tell your story.
  2. Call your Representative. If you can’t get through, call again. We need every single phone in the Capitol ringing off the hook until this bill is dead.
  3. Post to Facebook and social media. We need to get MORE people calling and visiting ASAP. Tell your friends and family that now is the moment to make their voices heard. The vast majority of Americans oppose this bill—we have to speak out and make sure they know it.

If you need more info, check out our updated TrumpCare page. Now is the moment to stand up, fight back, and kill this bill for good. We’re standing with you.

Send a short postcard to key members of the GOP congressional leadership, courtesy of Rise Up. You’ll have the chance to pick a member of the GOP leadership, and tell him (shocker, the GOP leadership is all male) why he needs to oppose the Trump initiative to remove hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants, many of whom have been in the United States for decades, and many of whom are raising US citizen children. Your message will be printed onto a postcard and sent to the Member of Congress that you select. http://cmsny.org/publications/warren-usbornchildren/

Action for Today! (1) Script for Calling Congress to Investigate Ties with Russia, and Pre-Call Anxiety Reduction Techniques

We’ve had some requests for a script to use when calling Senators and Representatives and we are providing a suggestion:

Hello! My name is _________________ and I live in (State)________________.  I’m calling today because I am very concerned about the information that has come to light about Russian interference in our elections, and about the ties the current administration has with Russia. I am calling to urge (Senator/Representative)_______________________________ to urge congress to conduct a full investigation of these actions and ties. Thank you so much.

That said, if you are still nervous, here’s some anxiety-calming info for you:

  1. Unless there is an apocalyptic event and Congresspeople are stuck in their Washington offices with nothing to do, you will never speak to one of them. Never. You will speak to a person hired to answer the phones.
  2. No one on the other end of the phone will ask you anything other than your name, and perhaps where you live. Please do not worry about not having ‘all the facts’, because none of us do! This is especially true for women—so many of us have ‘imposter syndrome’ and it holds us back. Just say what’s on your mind regarding a specific subject. If you are offended by the wall, just say that. If you are worried about families being broken up because of deportation, say that. One caveat: stick to one issue per call. And always say thank you. But you knew that!
  3. After you hang up, take a deep breath and, while smiling, say: “I just did that, and if I did it once, I can do it again!”.
  4. You’ll get better every time you call. It’s like getting to Carnegie Hall—practice, practice, practice!
